Voltage Rating Fundamentals
Power cord voltage ratings are expressed as U₀/U, where U₀ is the rated voltage between any conductor and earth (ground), and U is the rated voltage between phase conductors. For example, H05VV-F rated 300/500V means the insulation can withstand 300V between each conductor and ground, and 500V between any two conductors. Zhejiang Jinting Nuclear Cable Co., Ltd. manufactures power cords with voltage ratings appropriate for each market’s electrical system.
Common Voltage Rating Classes
| Rating Class | Example Cable | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|
| 300/300V | H03VV-F, H03VVH2-F | Light-duty indoor, table lamps, small electronics |
| 300/500V | H05VV-F, H05RN-F, H05RR-F | Standard household/office appliances, computers |
| 450/750V | H07RN-F, H07VV-F | Heavy-duty industrial, construction, outdoor |
| 0.6/1kV | H07VV-F (heavy variant) | Industrial power distribution, fixed wiring |
Global Voltage Systems
The world operates on various voltage standards: North America uses 120V (phase-to-ground) and 240V (phase-to-phase), Japan uses 100V, Europe and most of Asia use 230V phase-to-ground and 400V phase-to-phase, and some industrial systems operate at 480V or 600V. The power cord’s voltage rating must exceed the system’s phase-to-ground voltage (U₀) with adequate safety margin. A 300/500V cable is well-suited for 230V systems, while a 300/300V cable is appropriate for 100-120V systems.
Voltage Rating vs. Test Voltage
It is important to distinguish between the rated operating voltage and the dielectric test voltage. While a cable rated at 300/500V is designed for continuous operation at these voltages, the factory dielectric test is typically conducted at 2000-2500V AC for a short duration to verify insulation integrity. The test voltage is much higher than the operating voltage to provide a safety margin. Routine production testing at Zhejiang Jinting Nuclear Cable Co., Ltd. verifies insulation integrity on every power cord before shipment.
Jinting Voltage Rating Coverage
Our SAA-certified power cord products cover the full spectrum of voltage ratings. Our 250/250V certified products include 4V-75 H03VV-F and H03VVH2-F for light-duty cords. Our 250/440V (equivalent to 300/500V IEC) products include H05VV-F, H05RR-F, H05RN-F, and H05V2V2-F for general applications. Our 0.6/1kV products include H07VV-F and H07RN-F for heavy-duty applications. This comprehensive range ensures we can supply power cords rated for any global market’s voltage system.
Selecting the Correct Voltage Rating
To select the correct voltage rating, identify the nominal system voltage at the installation site, verify the phase-to-ground voltage (U₀) as the minimum rating requirement, consider any transient overvoltage conditions that may occur, and ensure the plug and connector are also rated for the full system voltage. When in doubt, specifying a higher voltage rating provides additional safety margin at marginal cost increase.
