Understanding Power Cord Ampacity
Ampacity—the maximum current a power cord can safely carry continuously without exceeding its temperature rating—is a fundamental safety parameter. Exceeding a cord’s ampacity can lead to insulation degradation, increased fire risk, and potential equipment damage. Zhejiang Jinting Nuclear Cable Co., Ltd. manufactures power cords with clearly specified ampacity ratings per international standards.
Standard Ampacity Table
| Conductor Size | PVC (70°C) | Rubber (60°C) | Silicone (150°C) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5mm² / 20 AWG | 3-4 A | 3 A | 6 A |
| 0.75mm² / 18 AWG | 6-10 A | 6 A | 12 A |
| 1.0mm² / 17 AWG | 10-12 A | 10 A | 16 A |
| 1.5mm² / 16 AWG | 13-16 A | 13 A | 20 A |
| 2.5mm² / 14 AWG | 18-20 A | 16 A | 25 A |
Derating Factors
Published ampacity ratings assume specific conditions (typically 30°C ambient, single cable in free air). When these conditions change, ampacity must be derated. For elevated ambient temperature above 30°C, derate by approximately 5-10% per 10°C rise. For multiple cables bundled together, derate by 20-30% for 2-3 cables, up to 50% for 6+ cables. For enclosed installation with restricted airflow, derate by 30-50%. For coiled cables (which trap heat), derate by 50-70%. These derating factors are cumulative.
Temperature Rating Effects
The cable’s insulation temperature rating (60°C, 70°C, 90°C, 105°C, etc.) determines the maximum conductor temperature. Higher-rated insulation allows higher ampacity for the same conductor size. However, the connector and plug at each end must also be rated for the temperature. A 90°C-rated cable terminated with a 70°C-rated plug limits the entire assembly to 70°C operation. Zhejiang Jinting Nuclear Cable Co., Ltd. carefully matches cable and connector ratings in all cord assemblies.
Regional Differences in Ampacity Standards
Ampacity ratings differ between standards. North America (NEC/UL) assigns 18 AWG SJT at 10A, while IEC assigns 0.75mm² H05VV-F at 6A—despite similar cross-sectional areas. European standards (VDE, CENELEC) follow IEC guidelines with different safety margins. Australian/New Zealand standards (AS/NZS) have their own rating tables. Always refer to the specific standard applicable in the target market rather than assuming generic values.
Practical Ampacity Selection
When selecting power cord ampacity, verify the equipment’s nameplate current rating, add at least 25% safety margin for continuous loads, consider the installation environment and any needed derating, check that the connectors are rated for the full current, and verify certification requirements for the target market. For Zhejiang Jinting Nuclear Cable Co., Ltd. products, refer to our detailed specification sheets for certified ampacity ratings under each applicable standard.
