Understanding Power Cord Wire Gauge Systems

Wire gauge is a fundamental specification for power cords, determining current-carrying capacity, voltage drop, flexibility, and cost. Two gauge systems dominate globally: AWG (American Wire Gauge) used primarily in North America, and metric cross-sectional area (mm²) used in Europe, Asia, and most international markets. Understanding the conversion between these systems is essential for specifying, sourcing, and comparing power cords across different markets. Zhejiang Jinting Nuclear Cable Co., Ltd. manufactures power cords to both AWG and metric specifications for global distribution.

AWG System Explained

The American Wire Gauge (AWG) system originated in the United States in 1857. It is a logarithmic scale where a higher gauge number indicates a smaller wire diameter. For power cords, common AWG sizes range from 10 AWG to 18 AWG. The diameter doubles approximately every 6 gauge steps, and the cross-sectional area doubles approximately every 3 gauge steps. Key AWG sizes for power cords include 18 AWG (0.82 mm², ~10A capacity), 16 AWG (1.31 mm², ~13A capacity), 14 AWG (2.08 mm², ~15-20A capacity), and 12 AWG (3.31 mm², ~20-25A capacity).

17 1.150 1.038 1.0 12
16 1.291 1.309 1.5 13-15

Metric Cable Designations

In international markets, power cords use metric designations defined by IEC and European harmonized cable standards. Common sizes include 0.5mm² for very light-duty applications (table lamps, phone chargers), 0.75mm² for light-duty (small appliances, electronics), 1.0mm² for general-purpose (computers, office equipment, standard C13 cords rated 10A), 1.5mm² for heavier-duty (C13 cords for higher-power equipment, C19 cords), and 2.5mm² for high-current applications (C19 cords for 16A, industrial equipment).

Current Rating Factors

Current-carrying capacity depends on more than just gauge. Key factors include ambient temperature (higher ambient reduces capacity), number of conductors in the cable (bundled conductors increase heating), cable jacket material (PVC vs rubber have different thermal properties), installation method (free air, conduit, tightly bundled), and regulatory standards (different standards may assign different ratings to the same gauge). Zhejiang Jinting Nuclear Cable Co., Ltd. ensures all power cords are rated according to the applicable standards for their target market.

Jinting Cable Production Range

Our SAA-certified cable production covers an extensive range: H03VV-F and H03VVH2-F from 2×0.5mm² to 2×0.75mm² (light duty), H05VV-F and H05VVH2-F from 2×0.75mm² to 3G2.5mm² (general purpose), H07VV-F from 2×0.75mm² to 3G2.5mm² (heavy duty PVC), H05V2V2-F from 2×0.75mm² to 5G2.5mm² (V-90 high temperature), H05RN-F and H05RR-F from 2×0.75mm² to 3G2.5mm², and H07RN-F from 2×1.0mm² to 3G2.5mm² (rubber). This comprehensive production capability allows Zhejiang Jinting Nuclear Cable Co., Ltd. to meet virtually any power cord specification requirement across global markets.

Voltage Drop Considerations

When specifying wire gauge, voltage drop over the cord length must be considered, especially for longer cords. A 3% voltage drop is generally considered acceptable for most applications. For example, a 10m 18 AWG cord carrying 10A would experience a voltage drop of approximately 2.5V at 120V (about 2%), which is acceptable. For longer runs or higher currents, stepping up to the next gauge is recommended to minimize voltage drop and associated heating.
