IEC C15 High-Temperature Power Cord Overview

The IEC C15 connector is a high-temperature variant of the standard C13 connector. Distinguished by a notch cut into the connector body, the C15 is specifically designed for applications where equipment generates elevated temperatures, requiring a connector rated for 120°C rather than the standard 70°C C13 rating. Zhejiang Jinting Nuclear Cable Co., Ltd. manufactures C15 power cords for demanding high-temperature applications.

C15 Technical Specifications

Parameter Specification
Standard IEC 60320-1, C15 connector
Rated Voltage (IEC) 250V AC
Rated Current (IEC) 10A
Temperature Rating 120°C
Pin Configuration 3-pin (L, N, PE/gnd)
Mating Inlet C16 (notched panel inlet)
Key Feature Notch prevents mating with standard C14

C15 vs C13: Key Differences

While the C15 and C13 connectors are dimensionally very similar, two critical differences set them apart. The C15 has a notch cut into the connector body that aligns with a ridge in the C16 inlet. This mechanical keyway prevents a C15 cord from being plugged into standard C14 equipment (avoiding misuse) and prevents a standard C13 cord (rated only 70°C) from being used with high-temperature C16 equipment inlets. The temperature rating is the fundamental difference: 70°C for C13 versus 120°C for C15, achieved through different plastic materials in the connector body.

Common Applications

The C15 power cord is essential for several high-temperature applications. Electric kettles and hot water urns commonly use C16 inlets because the connector must withstand heat rising from the appliance body. Server and networking equipment in high-density data center racks often use C16 inlets due to elevated ambient temperatures. Some high-performance computing equipment, industrial control systems in hot environments, and certain medical devices with heat-generating components also depend on C15-rated connections. The C15A variant rated for 155°C is used in the most extreme high-temperature applications.

Cable Requirements for C15 Cords

C15 power cords must use cables rated for the elevated temperature environment. Common cable selections include silicone rubber insulated cables for the highest flexibility and temperature resistance, PTFE or FEP insulated cables for extreme chemical and thermal resistance, H05RN-F rubber cables with adequate temperature rating, and high-temperature PVC or XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) insulated cables. The entire cord assembly, not just the connector, must be suitable for the operating environment, including consideration of the cable’s temperature rating at both the connector end and the plug end.

Global Configurations

Zhejiang Jinting Nuclear Cable Co., Ltd. manufactures C15 power cords with all major plug types: NEMA 5-15P for North America (rated 15A at 125V), CEE 7/7 for European markets, BS 1363 with appropriate fuse for UK applications, AS/NZS 3112 for Australia/New Zealand, GB 2099 for the Chinese market, and other country-specific configurations. Each cord set carries the appropriate certifications for its target market, ensuring global compliance.

Safety and Regulatory Considerations

The notch system on C15/C16 connectors is a critical safety feature. Equipment manufacturers must properly specify C16 inlets when equipment surface temperatures may exceed the C14’s 70°C rating. Using a standard C13 cord with C16 equipment is mechanically prevented but not impossible if excessive force is applied. Always verify the correct cord type for high-temperature equipment. Regulatory standards such as IEC 60335 (household appliances) and IEC 60950 (IT equipment) reference appropriate connector temperature ratings, and compliance requires using the correct connector class.

Manufacturing Excellence

C15 power cord production at Zhejiang Jinting Nuclear Cable Co., Ltd. involves specialized materials and processes. The high-temperature rated plastic used in injection molding the C15 body requires different processing parameters than standard nylon or PVC. Our quality control includes verification of the notch dimensions, temperature rating validation through thermal cycling tests, and full electrical testing per IEC 60320-1. We maintain traceability of temperature-rated materials to ensure each C15 connector meets the 120°C specification consistently.
