IEC C7 Figure-8 Power Cord Overview
The IEC C7 connector, commonly called the “figure-8” due to its distinctive shape resembling the number eight, is a two-pin connector used for a vast array of small electronic devices, audio equipment, and household appliances. Zhejiang Jinting Nuclear Cable Co., Ltd. manufactures C7 power cords with certifications for all major global markets.

Polarized vs Non-Polarized C7
The C7 connector exists in two variants. The standard C7 (non-polarized) has both sides of the figure-8 shape identical in size, allowing reversible insertion. The C7P (polarized) variant has one side squared off, making it physically impossible to insert the connector in the wrong orientation. The polarized version is used when proper orientation matters for safety, such as with equipment having a single-pole power switch on the live line. When specifying C7 power cords, it is essential to verify whether the equipment uses a standard C8 inlet or a polarized C8P inlet.
Class II (Double-Insulated) Connection
Since the C7 connector has no earth/ground connection, it is used exclusively with Class II (double-insulated) equipment that does not require a protective earth. Class II equipment achieves safety through reinforced or double insulation rather than relying on grounding. This makes C7 cords common with consumer electronics that have plastic enclosures and no exposed metal parts. Understanding this distinction is important for product designers and safety compliance.
Common Applications
The C7 power cord is one of the most ubiquitous connectors in consumer electronics. It is found on audio equipment (amplifiers, receivers, CD/DVD players), video equipment (TVs, monitors, set-top boxes), gaming consoles (many classic and current models), portable radios and music systems, small kitchen appliances, battery chargers, and various small electronic gadgets. Its compact, lightweight design makes it ideal for consumer devices where space and weight are important considerations.
SAA-Certified C7 from Jinting
Zhejiang Jinting Nuclear Cable Co., Ltd. holds multiple SAA certifications for C7 connectors. Our ST2 model (SAA-183005-EA) is a C7 Class II appliance connector rated 2.5A 250V, molded to 4V-75 H03VVH2-F 2×0.5-0.75mm² or 4V-75 H05VVH2-F 2×0.75mm² flexible cords. The JT-ST2 model (SAA-203211-EA) is a C7 non-rewireable Class II connector molded to 60245 IEC 66 H07RN-F 2×1.0mm² rubber cord. These certifications cover various cable types and sizes to suit different Australian market applications.
Cable Types for C7 Cords
C7 power cords use two-conductor cables appropriate for Class II equipment. Common types include H03VVH2-F 2×0.5mm² or 2×0.75mm² flat PVC cord for compact design and easy routing, H05VVH2-F 2×0.75mm² for slightly heavier-duty applications, SPT-1 18/2 or SPT-2 18/2 for North American cords, and round SVT 18/2 for a more premium feel and better durability. The absence of a ground conductor keeps C7 cords thinner and more flexible than grounded IEC cords.
Safety Considerations
While C7 cords are convenient and widely used, several safety aspects require attention. Since there is no earth connection, C7 cords must only be used with double-insulated equipment bearing the Class II symbol (a square within a square). The 2.5A rating means they should not be used with high-power devices. The reversible nature of non-polarized C7 connectors means equipment designers must ensure both polarities are safe. When a polarized C7P is required, never force a non-polarized C7 connector into a C8P inlet.
